Will Scarlet aka Scathelocke:Member of Robin Hoods Merry Men
Will Scarlet, also known as Will Scathlock, is rooted in the Robin Hood tradition. He appears in three of the four earliest surviving ballads that form the core of the tradition:
A Gest of Robyn Hode was his origin
(c. 1500). Here members of the outlaw band are sometimes named, and along with Little John and Much, Will Scarlet aka Scathlock is a name that consistently appears in the lists of Robin Hood’s “wild fellows.”
Though Will Scarlet is in the Robin Hood ballads, plays, and early novels, few tales develop the him prior to the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
Will Scarlet was first in the ballad Robin Hood and the Monk. Here Robin Hood decides to go to Nottingham, to pray in the church and hear Mass. The trip is against the counsel of Little John and Much, who advise Robin to take twelve outlaws with him; instead, Robin forces Little John to carry his bow. The pair quarrel, and Robin departs for Nottingham alone, where he is recognized by a treacherous monk and captured by the Sheriff’s forces. John and Much try to free Robin from jail, ambushing the monk while he is on his way to report Robin’s capture and bring back a warrant for his execution. The outlaws kill the monk and his young page, taking their places and obtaining the warrant, but when they reach Nottingham the gates are barred. John asks why the gates are closed, and the porter replies that it is because Robin Hood is in the prison
One legend states, Will Scathelock is his real name. He was a mercenary, but his wife was raped and murdered by other mercenaries. So calling himself Scarlet and seeking vengeance, Will murdered his wife’s killers.
“By than the yere was all agone
He had no man but twayne,
Lytell Johan and good Scathelocke
With hym all for to gone.”
- Little John
- Maid Marian
- Friar Tuck
- Will Scarlet “Scathelocke”
- Much the Miller’s Son
- Alan a Dale
Will had many different forms over the long history of story telling, but one things stands he was Robin Hoods right hand.
