“Hiding a joke behind a serious face”
If you played Destiny 1 you may remember a old shotgun named “The Comedian”. Well the punchline is that it’s this same shotgun just hiding under a different name.
Deadpan humor is a specific comedic delivery to contrast with a ridiculous subject matter. The delivery is meant to be blunt, ironic, or seemingly unintentional. The Name origin arose in the 1920s as a word combining “dead” and “pan” which at the time was a slang term for “face”.
Many known comedians that used this method are as follows.
- Rat pack comedian Joey Bishop
- Buster Keaton
- Steven Wright
- Louie CK
- Andre Braugher
- Bob Newhart
There are various versions of deadpan humor. Some are more blunt that others. Obvious deadpan uses a high contrast either with characters or situations, but more subtle deadpan can test the observational limits of an audience. The idea is all in the delivery, to say or present your joke in the most dead or expressionless tone and blank face.
It’s not a bad shotgun either…so did you get it?
