Show Notes – Extra Lore 34 (Dishonored)

Audio Link for Episode

This week, the team takes a quick glance at the Dishonored universe. As a part of that conversation, we delve into the notable characters within the main titles of the series, a general timeline and high level view of the world’s geography, and a brief look at the major metaphysical foundations of the void.

Set in the fictional, plague-ridden industrial city of Dunwall, the game follows the figure of Corvo Attano, who is the bodyguard to the empress of the Isles. He is framed for her murder and forced to become an assassin, seeking revenge on those who plotted against him. He is aided in this quest by the Loyalists – a resistance group fighting to reclaim Dunwall – and the Outsider – a powerful being who imbues Corvo with magical abilities.

Gameplay is experienced through a first-person perspective and allows the player a choice in the manner of completing missions through stealth, combat, or a combination of both. Note that it is possible to finish all missions to eliminate Corvo’s targets in a non-lethal manner, if the player wishes to do so. RPG elements are present in the option to upgrade powers and make moral choices that result in nonlinear consequences. These choices are tracked in game through the ”chaos” system – which takes into account the amounts of friendly fire, violence, and deaths that the player causes. This modifies the game world, which allows the choices affect the story without punishing the player or forcing them to feel the need for one style over the other. This ultimately influences which of the game’s two endings is reached.

The story of Dishonored 2 follows the figures of Emily Kaldwin and Corvo, her father, as they attempt to reclaim the throne 15 years later. Events occur in the city of Karnaca, taking place after Emily has been deposed by the witch Delilah Copperspoon. Emily and Corvo both have their own forms of supernatural abilities, and missions can be completed through a variety of means, similar to the first game. Another similarity lies in the game having a multitude of available endings, based again on the player’s standing within the “chaos” system.
